Dr. Paul D. Tortland, D.O., FAOASM

Dr. Tortland founded Valley Sports Physicians & Orthopedic Medicine in 1995. He is a 1991 graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing his internship he did his residency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and general practice at the University of New England. After residency Dr. Tortland did a sports medicine fellowship at SportsCare/The Toledo Hospital, in Toledo, Ohio. A native of Stamford, CT, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut in 1981. He also received a master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from UConn, and prior to embarking on his medical career Dr. Tortland maintained a private practice in marriage and family therapy while teaching at UConn. He is board certified in Sports Medicine, Family Practice, and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.

He is a team physician for the University of Hartford, United States Figure Skating Association, World Wrestling Entertainment and Bloomfield High School He has served as a volunteer physician for the U.S. Olympic Committee, and he was the Head Team Physician for the New England Blizzard of the former women’s professional American Basketball League.

Dr. Tortland is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine. He is also a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine, the American Academy of Osteopathy, and the American Osteopathic Association. He is a member of the Connecticut State Medical Society’s Committee on the Medical Aspects of Sports, and he is currently the President of the Connecticut Osteopathic Medical Society. Dr. Tortland is on staff at St. Francis and Hartford Hospitals, and he is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

Dr. Tortland is in frequent demand as a speaker on the local, regional, national and international level. He lectures and teaches extensively on topics ranging from sports medicine to chronic neck and back pain.
 

Albert J. Kozar, DO

Dr. Kozar joined Valley Sports Physicians in August 2002 upon completing his Sports Medicine Fellowship at Sports Care/The Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He is a graduate of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Athens, Ohio, where he also completed an undergraduate fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. He did his family practice residency at Doctors Hospital, in Massillon, Ohio. He is board certified in Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment along with Sports Medicine.

Dr. Kozar is a member of American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Osteopathy, the American Osteopathic Association, and the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine. Locally he is a member of the Hartford County Medical Association, the Connecticut State Medical Society, and the Connecticut Osteopathic Medical Society. He is on staff at both St. Francis and Hartford Hospitals.

Currently, he serves as a team physician for the University of Hartford and World Wrestling Entertainment, while caring for many of the professional and recreational athletes in the community.

During his Sports Medicine Fellowship, he assisted in the care of the football, women's soccer, track, and tennis teams at The Univeristy Of Toledo (Division I-A), men and women's basketball at Owens Community College (Division II), The Toledo Storm (East Coast Hockey League) and The Toledo Mud Hens (AAA affiliate of The Detroit Tigers). He took an interest and covered numerous road races including The USGA National Track and Field Championship 24-hour Run, Glass City Marathon, Triathalon, and various 5 and 10 K races. His Mentors, Roger Kruse, MD, a team physician for The U.S. Figure Skating Association, and P. Gunnar Brolinson, D.O., a team physician for The USA Ski Team, brought Dr. Kozar exposure to the care of many world class athletes.

Dr. Kozar, a 93' Golden Domer (graduate of University of Notre Dame) lives in East Granby, CT with his wife, Christina Kozar, D.O., a pediatrician in Enfield at Enfield Pediatric Associates. They have two children, Zachary and Audrey. Dr, Kozar is a jazz aficionado and formerly played trumpet in the jazz band in college. He is a huge sports fan, especially of college athletics and The Fighting Irish. He enjoys football (formerly played for 12 years), basketball and golf.
